No one was born with perfect teeth. Getting the smile you want takes work—and sometimes means getting braces. But before you start picturing torturesome appointments and jabbing wires, take a deep breath. Many cases that used to be treated with traditional braces can now be fixed with clear teeth aligners at home. Goodbye, metal mouth. Hello, convenient, removable trays delivered right to your door.
Because clear aligners look and function differently than traditional braces, many people aren’t sure what to expect. Here’s exactly what you need to know about starting your treatment, from your initial consultation to your first set of aligner trays.
What to Expect Before You Start Treatment
Some aligner companies cut costs by removing the dentist from the equation. Call us crazy, but we think moving teeth around requires a professional.
That’s why all Dandy treatments kick off with a quick 30-minute consultation with one of our certified dentists. Because there’s an actual expert involved, we can treat cases that other aligner companies won’t touch. The appointment is commitment-free and can be booked online in just two clicks—no phone call necessary.
If just thinking about going to the dentist gives you anxiety, don’t fret. We carefully vet all of our partners and work with only the best. Our partners are so careful and courteous, you’ll (almost) forget they have their hands in your mouth.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Your initial consultation will last about half an hour. During your appointment, your doctor will cover a few bases:
- Intra-oral scans of your mouth
- Dental hygiene check
- Explanation of treatment
An “intra-oral scan” may sound intimidating, but it’s nothing to be afraid of. All it means is that your dentist will use a top-of-the-line intra-oral scanner—basically a fancy camera—to capture images of every nook and cranny of your teeth. They’ll use this info to figure out if you are a good candidate for clear aligners, as well as start planning your at-home teeth aligner treatment and create a 3D preview of your new smile.
Other clear aligner providers take clay impressions of your teeth. (You have to bite into clay trays, let them set, then pull them out. Trust us, it’s not fun, and it tastes gross.) Or they send clay impression kits to your home. This might seem convenient, but mistakes are pretty common (you aren’t a dentist, after all) and can result in uncomfortable, poorly fitting aligners that may even make your smile worse. No bueno.
On the other hand, 3D scans are faster, more effective, and won’t make you gag. With Dandy, your scans will always be taken by friendly, trained hygienists and dentists. No need for you to stress about getting an accurate clay impression or heading back to the dentist’s office for annoying retakes. We know you’re busy, and we’ve got your back.
Dental Hygiene Check
Your appointment will also include a general dental hygiene check for things like cavities, which can actually get worse with at-home teeth aligners, as well as other issues that might impact your clear aligner treatment. Crowded teeth, for example, require a treatment called interproximal reduction (IPR) to help make room in your mouth, speed up treatment, and produce better results. Over 85% of Dandy patients need IPR, so we offer it at no additional cost.
If we uncover any issues we can’t fix, we won’t leave you high and dry. Instead, we’ll hook you up with another friendly neighborhood dentist who can help.
How to Get Started With Your Aligners
Once your treatment plan is ready, we’ll 3D print your aligner trays and deliver them right to your door. No need for you to schlep back to the dentist to pick them up.
Other clear aligner providers make you pick up your trays in person and require regular follow-up visits or online appointments to track your progress. Some won’t even check in on your progress at all.
With Dandy, your treatment team will keep track of your hard work through monthly progress photos via the Dandy app. If anything looks off with your pearly whites, they’ll take whatever steps needed to help you correct it. You can also schedule an in-person check up with your dentist—the same one you saw for your initial consultation.
