The purpose of the D2740 dental code
Updated for 2024: The dental code D2740 is used when reporting full-coverage porcelain, ceramic, eMax, and zirconia crown and bridge abutments—most often for anterior teeth. The CDT (Current Dental Terminology) code D2740 is part of the restorative category that covers crowns and bridges used for decay, damage, chipping, cracking, and root canals. When submitting to the insurance company for porcelain, ceramic, eMax, and zirconia crowns be mindful of the limitations and exclusions as well as clinical documentation such as X-rays, endo reports, and intraoral imagery.

Frequently asked questions about D2740
Porcelain has previously been the popular choice amongst dental practices for decades but with the rise of modern dental technology including both materials and dental lab processes ceramic crowns—such as eMax crowns and Zirconia crowns —are most often the best choice for your patients.
Current-day ceramic crowns and bridges have superior aesthetics that best mimic the translucent nature of your patients’ teeth while also boasting incredible strength and durability. Porcelain remains a budget option with great enduringness but a less natural look than ceramic crowns and bridges.
While the CDT code D2740 includes ceramic and porcelain crown and bridge abutments, the CDT code D2752 is used for Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM), but specifically fused to a noble metal (25-59% noble metal), not a high noble metal (60% noble metal).
In the future, when considering PFM crown and bridge cases that use code D2752, you should consider treating them with zirconia instead.
While PFM is a sturdy choice for teeth, the durability of zirconia crowns and bridges now outperforms PFM. Zirconia also bests PFM in aesthetics (no dark line at the gum) and has excellent biocompatibility.

Zirconia crowns with Dandy
Zirconia crowns (dental code D2740) by Dandy have become the most versatile choice for dentists when needing both strength and aesthetics for the treatment. We offer an aesthetic zirconia for full contour anterior or posterior work as well as a stronger Monolithic Zirconia (slightly less aesthetic) for posterior crowns for bruxers and bridges up to a full arch.
eMax crowns with Dandy
eMax crowns (dental code D2740) by Dandy are a great option when aesthetics far outweigh the need for strength. Our all-ceramic eMax crowns are made from lithium disilicate which allows the crowns to be indistinguishable from the patient’s real teeth. As such, we suggest this option for many anterior treatments.
